With the introduction of its website on Wednesday, billionaire Elon Musk’s xAI declared the formation of the artificial intelligence (AI) startup and unveiled a team of engineers with experience at businesses including Alphabet-owned Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

Musk, the owner of Twitter and CEO of Tesla, will serve as the startup’s CEO. Musk has previously stated that the growth of AI ought to be put on hold and that the industry requires oversight.

“Announcing the creation of @xAI to comprehend reality,” Musk wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.

On July 14, xAI will host a Twitter Spaces event, according to the website.

According to a state filing, Musk registered X.AI Corp, a Nevada-incorporated company, in March.

Musk is listed as the company’s only director while Jared Birchall, the family office’s managing director, is listed as the secretary. The current xAI team claims to have experience from “DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto” among other companies.

In April, Musk stated that he was working to create a political correctness-free “truth-seeking AI” to compete with Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s OpenAI’s ChatGPT. He has, however, also voiced worries about AI’s unfavorable effects, calling it “a possible cause of civilizational destruction.”

In accordance to a Nevada state registration with the Secretary of State, Musk and Jared Birchall, who manages Musk’s private office, incorporated a company called X.AI in March. Musk has regularly lambasted OpenAI, the most well-known AI startup and maker of ChatGPT, in public.
