Mamta Banerjee, CM of West Bengal, on Monday, stated the decision to ban the movie The Kerala Story to be screened in the theatres. As per the CM of West Bengal, the decision to ban the film was taken to avoid any instance of hatred and violence. It is said that it also ensures to maintain the peaceful environment of the state.  

Reacting to the ban, producer Vipul Shah has said that they will take legal action under the provision and fight for the film.

Sudipto Sen directed the movie. Actors Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani played the main leads in the movie. The movie was released on May 5th, 2023. The film made a total earning of Rs. 35.25 crore in the first three days of release. The major earning came from the third day, Rs. 16 crores on Sunday.

Surrounded by criticism from the beginning:

The movie has been in hot waters since the release of its trailer. The trailer stated that around 32,000 girls from Kerala go missing and then get admitted into the terrorist group. It resulted in outrage from many people, resulting in the film team removing the stats.

The group of people are calling the movie to be political propaganda. The Kerala High Court received a request to put a stay order on the release of the movie. It resulted in a thorough investigation of the film.

The Kerala High Court refused the request to put a stay. The court has stated that the movie provides a proper disclaimer to deliver the facts about the story. The disclaimer states that the film is fictionalized and has stated that the film is dramatized to display the event. The movie doesn’t claim the accuracy of the historic event.

Recently the movie faced a major setback from Tamil Nadu. President of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association, M Subramaniam, confirmed that the local theatre has decided not to screen the movie in their theatres.

He stated that in Tamil Nadu, only a few pan-India theatre groups were screening the movie. It was further added that the movie did not star any known actors from the area and it did not perform well in a few local theatres. The local theatres have decided not to screen the movie as the risk and threat caused by the active protest were not worth going through.

The movie The Kerala Story has been directed criticism from the trailer release. It forced the film team to remove the stats from the trailer. The struggle of the movie doesn’t end there. The local theatres of Tamil Nadu have decided not to screen the movie. Adding to the ongoing chaos, the movie has been banned in West Bengal.
